Driving in the Ottawa Rain

During the late summer and fall, we tend to see rain storms in Kanata and Stittsville. I guess that beats the alternative (snow). Rain can make driving tough, which is why we wanted to provide you with tips for driving your Kanata/Stittsville in rainy weather.

• Make sure you replace your windshield wipers when needed.  And you know when they are “needed,” when they are skipping, squeaking, or streaking. New windshield wiper blades will do wonders for improving your visibility and help you better react to anything that happens while you are driving.
• Reduce/eliminate distractions.  Live with what is on the radio, don’t text (ever) and just pay attention to the road, not the screaming kids in the back.  Keep your eyes on the road and both hands on the wheel.
• Drive at a more conservative speed. Even if other vehicles around you are speeding, don’t be shy about driving a speed that you are comfortable with.  Your visibility is key.
• Keep a safe distance.  You went to driving school, so you know that you should never be tailgating, let alone in the rain.  Stay five car lengths, or one second of following distance per ten miles per hour, behind the car in front of you.
• Be prepared. Even if you are driving as safely as possible, you might still be at risk for skidding or hydroplaning. If you begin skidding, do not slam on the brakes! Remain calm and slowly steer in the direction you want to go. Similar steps should be followed if you are hydroplaning.
